The General Medicine Accredited Advanced Trainee positions are the key point of contact for medical advice on the hospital site. While the position can present challenges, we believe it offers a highly rewarding experience.
The successful candidate will be aligned with one of three inpatient medical teams, each comprising two Interns/HMOs and a Basic Physician Trainee (BPT) including Gastroenterology, Neurology/Renal and Endocrinology. There will also be opportunities to manage undifferentiated acute medical cases within the Acute Medical Unit. Some weekend shifts involving senior clinical supervision and ward rounds, under consultant oversight, will be required and scheduled in line with the Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA).
The positions have been designed to provide a wide range of opportunities to the successful candidate, with exposure to a wide range of inpatient and outpatient acute and chronic medical conditions. Bendigo Health takes its responsibilities to doctors in training seriously and mentoring and professional development are important aspects of this post. The successful candidate will have access to Bendigo Health specific training opportunities, but also the Advanced Trainee teaching program at the Austin/Northern and VIMG. Advanced Trainees are expected to support candidates for the FRACP exams and help the DPEs with organising the exams.
This position is designed to offer broad and valuable clinical exposure. Daily consultant-led ward rounds are a core component, with the expectation that the Advanced Trainee will lead some of these under appropriate consultant supervision, depending on their level of experience and competence. The Advanced Trainee will also attend subspecialty outpatient clinics—allocated according to individual training needs—which may include Gastroenterology, General Medicine, Neurology and Peri-operative Medicine.
Bendigo Health is dedicated to fostering the professional development of junior doctors. Mentorship and continuous learning are key components of this role. Active participation in Grand Rounds, Journal Club, and Basic Physician Training (BPT) teaching sessions is expected and incorporated into the roster. Attendance—whether in person or virtually—at Austin/Northern Advanced Trainee teaching and Victorian IMG (VIMG) sessions is strongly encouraged and fully supported.
Advanced Trainees are also expected to contribute to the education of FRACP examination candidates and assist the Directors of Physician Education (DPEs) with exam preparation and coordination. In line with our commitment to comprehensive training, there is an expectation that the Advanced Trainee will undertake a research or quality improvement project during their term at Bendigo Health. Our overarching goal is to support you in becoming a confident, competent, and well-rounded General Physician.
